The kitchen sink handles more than most people give it credit for. That includes grease, food scraps, soap, hard water minerals, and the occasional thing that should have gone in the trash. All of it moves through the same set of pipes day after day, and the wear eventually adds up. Mr. Rooter Plumbing offers kitchen plumbing for everything from a leak under the cabinet to a full repipe during a kitchen renovation. The problems we find are almost always connected to how the system has been used. Read more to get a clearer picture of what your kitchen plumbing is dealing with and where things usually go wrong.
Bathroom drains collect hair and soap scum. Kitchen drains collect grease, which enters the drain as a liquid, cools inside the pipe, and solidifies into a sticky coating that narrows the line. Food gets caught in the coating, then soap residue binds to it. The result is a dense, layered blockage that sits much deeper in the line than a bathroom clog.
Garbage disposals make this worse. They break food into smaller pieces, but smaller doesn't mean safe to drain. Fine food solids suspend in water, travel a few feet down the pipe, and settle where the slope flattens or where grease has already started to coat the walls. A disposal that runs constantly without a steady flush of cold water accelerates the buildup.
Hot water and dish soap don’t clear grease clogs. They temporarily liquefy the surface, push the grease a few feet further into the line, and allow it to re-solidify. A local plumber inStuart uses hydro-jetting or a drain auger to physically remove the material rather than displace it. Most kitchen drain clogs that return within a few weeks were never fully cleared in the first place.

Print NowA slow leak under the kitchen sink can lead to soft spots in the cabinet floor, musty odors, or mineral deposits on the pipe fittings. Once those signs appear, the water has already been sitting in the cabinet for weeks. Wood swells, the cabinet floor delaminates, and mold grows in the particleboard.
The leak source is usually the drain basket gasket where the sink meets the drainpipe, the P-trap connections, or the supply line fittings behind the shutoff valves. Supply line leaks are the most dangerous because they run under pressure. A slow drip from a braided supply line can accelerate into a full failure with no additional warning. Plumbers replace supply lines as a standard step during any under-sink plumbing repair because the cost of replacement is a fraction of the cost of water damage remediation.
Cabinet damage, subfloor saturation, and mold remediation are the three outcomes a slow leak produces when it goes unchecked for months. None of them is covered under standard homeowner's insurance if the leak was present and ignored. Catching it early means replacing a gasket or a fitting. Catching it late means a contractor, a mold inspector, and a larger bill.
Adding a dishwasher to a kitchen without one requires a dedicated hot water supply line, a drain connection to the sink drain or garbage disposal, and, in most cases, a dedicated 120-volt circuit. The drain connection must include a high loop or an air gap fitting to prevent drain water from siphoning back into the dishwasher. Skipping the high loop creates a cross-contamination risk and violates most local plumbing codes.
Ice maker lines run from a cold water supply valve, typically under the sink or behind the refrigerator, to the appliance. The connection uses a saddle valve or a proper tee fitting. Saddle valves are the more common installation and the more problematic one. They pierce the supply pipe with a needle valve that corrodes, restricts flow, and fails without warning. A licensed plumber installs a full tee fitting instead, which gives a clean connection and doesn't degrade the host pipe.
Both appliance connections require permits in most jurisdictions when they involve new supply or drain lines. A plumbing service that pulls the proper permits protects you if the work is inspected during a home sale. Unpermitted appliance connections show up on buyer inspections and can delay a closing.
Mr. Rooter has done two stellar jobs for us. About a year ago they replaced a water heater hot water line in the wall. It was a Saturday and an emergency. Response time was excellent and the work was excellent. This past Friday 11/08, the 2011 water heater itself had to be replaced. Again Mr. Rooter was “Johnny on the spot” and got it done in excellent order. I moved down here from NY in 2020 and , of course, hadn’t found a plumber connection until I needed one. Found Mr. Rooter and am sticking with them! Thank you fellas…
This company is always prompt, courteous and affordable. Their customer service and knowledge in assessing the scope of the job over the telephone is amazing. Clint Morton, my technician was the most competent professional I have experienced in a long time. THANK YOU!
I just moved to the area and have needed assistance with multiple items. Many of which he helped me figure out how to do it on my own and didn't charge me for the advice and recommendations he provided. Very grateful for John and his team. Highly recommend them for all of your plumbing needs.
Mr. Rooter sent us the kindest, most knowledgeable and friendly person we could have ever asked for. He was thorough, shared next steps the whole way! So glad we called!! Thanks John for your amazing service
From my initial contact with Mr. Rooter to schedule an appointment for an estimate, the office staff were extremely professional. My appointment was scheduled within a two day period. My plumbing technician, Clinton, arrived on time for the estimate. Clinton also arrived on time for the installation appointment. He took the time to answer all of my questions. After he completed the job, he cleaned up the area completely. Clinton was a consummate professional, extremely courteous, friendly and helpful. If you are looking for a plumbing company with a courteous and professional staff, Mr. Rooter is the company for you.
I've used the Port St. Lucie Mr. Rooter on 2 occasions- once for a consultation on a possible water leak and again to install a dishwasher. I found them, both times, to be capable, professional, and to go above and beyond my expectations for the quality of the service. It's also worth noting that I'm pretty sure the plumber who did my first consultation on the leak was dishonest and prepared charge me to unnecessarily replumb my whole house. Mr. Rooter was very thorough, clear, and apparently honest, in their diagnosis. They also didn't charge me for it. I couldn't…
My family went through 2 other local plumbers before we found Mr. Rooter Plumbing of the Treasure Coast 2 years ago. We have had no desire to change plumbers since. Our technician, Clint, is "Grade A?". He always explains everything in full to our complete understanding and sets the expectations high and meets them. Every bit of work we've had him do has been of top quality. There is never a need to call them back as the job is done correctly the first time. They are extraordinarily accommodating with scheduling. We had to reschedule a water heater replacement multiple…
I've used Mr. Rooter plumbing multiple times. I am always extremely satisfied with this company. They have extensive knowledge in their field of work. I have never doubted their abilities or intentions. Every time the work has been fast, efficient, and affordable. I use this company for my commercial business and if I have any issues at home, they will always be the first to call. If you are looking for someone who knows what they're doing .. this is the place to call.
The kitchen drain handles more volume than any other drain in the house, and what goes into it determines how quickly the pipes degrade. These three habits make a big difference:
Hard water accelerates fixture wear in a specific way. Mineral deposits build up inside faucet aerators and reduce flow, then work backward into the valve seat and cartridge. Cleaning aerators every six months and replacing cartridges when flow drops prevents internal corrosion and a full faucet replacement. Experienced plumbers see cartridge failure most in homes with untreated water and faucets that are more than eight years old.
Drain strainers catch the debris that causes most kitchen clogs. A basket strainer over the sink drain stops food solids from entering the line. It costs a few dollars and takes two minutes to clean. That single step reduces the frequency of drain service calls more than any other maintenance measure a homeowner can take without tools.
Mr. Rooter Plumbing is excited to serve local businesses and homeowners. Our licensed plumbers are available for diagnostics, repairs, appliance connections, and full kitchen replumbing. Call us to schedule a kitchen plumbing inspection or to get a quote on a repair.
